UNS Jewellery: reflections of Islamic heritage

Article by Simons Petrik

The phrase, ‘Islamic art’ does not only refer to the historical artwork created by Muslims, but to anything produced under Muslim rule from the seventh century and the establishment of Islam to the late Ottoman Empire. The phrase, ‘Islamic art’ does not only refer to the historical artwork created by Muslims, but to anything produced under Muslim rule from the seventh century and the establishment of Islam to the late Ottoman Empire. So expansive was the Islamic artistic tradition as can be seen in UNS’ Islamic Jewellery and Islamic prayer beads. Reflections in UNS’ unique Islamic jewellery, encompasses both the silver work and Muslim prayer beads, or misbaha, used for invocations, or tasbeeh.

From its humble beginnings in Mecca, the message of Islam travelled to the distant reaches of Asia, Turkey, Spain and North Africa. At the time, artists used calligraphy, floral or plant designs, and scrolling patterns or geometry, as depicted in UNS’ Islamic jewellery and Muslim prayer beads. An example of floral motifs in UNS’ Islamic jewelry is the ‘Allah 7-fold Pendant’, where Divani script shapes the Divine name using silver within a flower rotating on a delicate chain. The spirit of graceful Islamic architecture is reflected in the unique tassel of a misbaba carved from exotic woods to resemble the top of a graceful Turkish minaret. While using a misbaha or the Islamic prayer beads to do one’s tasbeeh , one can truly appreciate the Hadith, “Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty.”

The earliest Islamic art dates back to the Syrian Umayyad dynasty, at about 660AD. As the Islamic empire began to grow it conquered the neighbouring Byzantines, adapting their beautiful use of floral and scroll motifs as well as their high domed ceilings. A fine example of this, is the ‘Floral Shamsa’ piece in UNS’ Islamic jewelry collection, where flower vines form an elegant, oval shaped pendant.

The Abassids seized power in 759AD and moved the Islamic capital to Baghdad, benefiting from Iranian, Chinese, Eurasian and Indian influences. At this time woodwork and carving shifted to the forefront of the art scene; many mosques and private homes had screens carved of wood in the ‘arabesque’ style. Similarly, in the misbaha collection by UNS, skilled artisans use exotic hardwoods to create highly prized Muslim prayer beads to use for tasbeeh. Other artistic use of wood in modern day art can be found in various other designs of Islamic prayer beads and Islamic jewelry such as earrings.
